This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a low socio-economic and often rough area of Los Angeles. Although they do not live in the best of neighborhoods, I strive to give them the best education for a brighter future.

My students are 48 energetic, inquisitive, smart 5-6 year old students from diverse backgrounds in the dual language program.

They consist of 50% English Language Learners with a Latino background and 50% English only students with Latino, African American, & White backgrounds. I love that my students are diverse in their backgrounds and in their Spanish abilities. They are able to learn from each other as they begin their journey into biliteracy and bilingualism.

My Project

We have a new dual language program at our school, but alas very few materials in the target language, Spanish. We need many books in Spanish to build our classroom library.

A classroom library is an essential part of any classroom.

Students need to have a wide variety of books in the classroom that will allow them to develop their reading, writing, and language skills. These books will allow my students to read on their own or with their friends during independent work time. They will also allow me to use these books for a read aloud or a more focused lesson.

More importantly, these books will be in their target language and will help the kids develop their Spanish vocabulary and knowledge. Learning a new language requires as much exposure to the new language, and this includes books!
