This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students LOVE to read! It is so amazing to watch how engaged and excited they are to learn. My only wish is that I could provide them with more Spanish books that fit their likes, interests, and personalities! We have one hour of Spanish literacy daily, where students read, write and discuss.

My students are sixth graders in a Boston public school.

They spend alternate weeks of instruction in English and Spanish. They truly love reading and beg me to order more interesting novels in Spanish. They are eager to read books that fulfill their hunger to learn, and ask to advance their Spanish. Our students are mostly made up of Hispanic scholars, that come from low income families. We also have a substantial population of non-Hispanic students, who entered our school in order to learn Spanish. Being in an urban setting, resources are scarce. Students' interest can be overlooked, and underfunded. This project will give students the joy of reading books that ACTUALLY interest them, and all in Spanish!

My Project

With these new and engaging books, students will be able to improve literacy with modern, young adult literature. The most sacred type of reading is independent reading. My students have torn through my existing (and fairly weak) library and need a wide variety of independent reading books to choose from in order to experience the joy of getting lost in a book. Books like The Diary of Greg, Biography of Steve Jobs, and Goosebumps in Spanish are on the list of items so students can fall in love with a popular series.

A variety of independent reading books will give students a choice in their reading and will inspire intellectual autonomy.

Students will be able to engage in modern-day, young adult literature and have the materials to have literature circles, all in SPANISH! Thank you for considering our project!
