Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Estudiantes, es tiempo para lectura independiente." "YAYYYYYYY!!!!" What I love most about my job is that all of the students in the school are bilingual. Having grown up in a bilingual/bicultural household myself, I understand the value of learning a second language.

My students have an opportunity that is not very common and it is important for them to embrace and foster their biliteracy.

Each individual comes into the classroom ready to learn in both languages. They are proud of the culture that the language brings as well. Our school is a very cohesive community and once a child enters our school, they are immediately accepted into a family. The school is not very large which allows the teachers and staff to really get to know and watch all of the students grow up.

My Project

When I started working here 4 years ago, there were very few books that the students had to choose from. Due to the varying levels and needs of the students, the selection got even smaller for them depending on their reading level. As the years went on, the classroom library grew. Every year, we continue to increase our selection and my students get so excited when they see new books in the library. The need for Spanish books is even greater than for English. Resources are scarcer in Spanish than they are in English. It is important for us to make sure that the students see equity in both languages and enjoy reading just as much in Spanish as they do in English. One way of making sure of that is by providing a wide variety of books at different levels for them to get excited about and read! Also, some books are more popular among the students than others. There is a high demand for these books and, for this reason, I try to make sure that there is more than one copy of these books.

These books will make a huge positive impact in the classroom.

The simple visual of these books in the classroom will add to an environment where literacy in Spanish is encouraged and celebrated. Students read all the time both in school and at home. The more books they have accessible to them, the more excited and engaged they will be in their reading. Let's make biliteracy fun!
