This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all very bright and unique. They have a wide variety of interests and generally all love reading. It does seem to be a challenge to get some students into reading in Spanish which is why I want to provide more selection for their independent reading time.

It's hard enough learning how to read.

Now imagine having to know how to read in two languages! My students come in every day ready to learn in either Spanish or English. For all of them, they are faced with the challenge of learning a second language. It's not easy, but they work hard! I admire my students for coming in everyday eager to learn. They are intelligent, motivated, and have courage. PLUS they are ALL bilingual! The students in my classroom are a diverse group of unique individuals who bring in something different to the classroom. Our school is a great place where students feel comfortable learning and engaging in different activities. The expectations are high for our students and they get closer to them every day.

My Project

What better way to get into reading than having a great book in your hands! My students need 46 Spanish language books that cater to their wide variety of interests and preferences. Students are expected to read independently during literacy station time, as well as nightly. However, the variety that is currently in our classroom library is not very plentiful. My vision is to provide my students with many books that can spark their interest and make them eager to read in Spanish. The books vary in difficulty and content which cater to my students who each have different interests and needs. They will learn many different things and apply what we learn in class (such as skills and strategies like compare and contrast, drawing conclusions, etc.) to their reading.

The goal of this project is to promote a love for reading in Spanish!

Having a wide selection of books to choose from will get my students excited about reading new books. They will be much more eager about picking up a book and getting into their reading!
