This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In this hands-on community service project, my high school Spanish students will write, illustrate, and professionally bind their own bilingual children’s books—beautifully crafted in both English and Spanish. But this initiative goes beyond the classroom: once the books are completed, students will visit a local elementary school to read their creations aloud, sharing stories that promote empathy, cultural pride, and—most importantly—kindness.
Through this project, students will lead a community service effort rooted in compassion and literacy.
By becoming mentors to younger children, they’ll demonstrate that kindness means sharing your voice, your culture, and your time. This outreach builds a connection between our high school and the broader school community, and reinforces the power of language to unite.
The materials requested will make this project possible. Book Binding Kits, chipboard, bone folders, PVA glue, and utility knives will allow students to produce professional-quality books, developing skills in craftsmanship and attention to detail. Glossy double-sided paper and ink refills will bring their words and illustrations to life, showing young readers that their stories matter.
This project supports not just our class, but our school and neighborhood by encouraging student leadership, promoting bilingual literacy, and spreading kindness across generations. It’s a tangible, creative, and meaningful way for students to engage in community service—and leave a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of others.
