Libro-mania! Knowledge, Discovery, & Inspiration in Books

My students need access to relevant and engaging texts - including 101 Changemakers, novels by Edwidge Danticat, and poetry by Sonia Sanchez - to improve literacy.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Eanes's classroom raised $712

My Students

Remember that poem or book you read that really left an impact - even changed some perspectives you had about the world? Well, in my middle school classroom, some students haven’t encountered that “great text” yet - they haven’t had the experience of truly falling in love with reading.

My students are curious, creative, imaginative, and diligent young people.

They are extremely passionate about social justice and human rights related topics. A significant portion of our students are multilingual immigrants or children of immigrants, and in many cases, they need extra support with English Language acquisition. As middle schoolers in a Kindergarten - 8th grade school located right in the heart of Harlem, many of them have been members of our school community since they were very small, and are truly invested here.

My Project

Unfortunately, our school does not have a library, so access to engaging, relevant reading materials poses a huge challenge. My students have a tiny classroom library for checking out independent reading books, but it is far from adequate. They will benefit from additional book options - especially in nonfiction, poetry, and global texts, since those genres are not as well represented. Countless studies have shown that rigorous, structured independent reading programs in schools dramatically increase students’ literacy learning; by far the biggest benefit is that it helps students to establish a life-long love for reading and developing new knowledge.

My students will really benefit from being able to access a more diverse, relevant set of books within our classroom library.

Some love to read already and just don’t have enough variety of new books from which to choose. For those who haven’t fallen in love with reading just yet, I’m hoping that this new book selection will provide some entrance points into “libro-mania” as their curiosity and interests bloom through reading.
