Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am excited to take part of a new district initiative that focuses on the academic achievement of at-risk students that have performed below grade level. The WIN Academy is a student-centered program created to help ensure all children have the opportunities and support needed to achieve academic success. Through this academy, students who have not been successful in a “traditional” school setting will be able to gain two or more years worth of knowledge in a fast track, demanding, flexible education system that includes the daily usage of technology, student interactions, and project based learning.
My Project
We are in the process of renovating our classroom library. While the pieces that make our reading nook are gradually coming along, our books are in great need of replacement.
Our classroom recently sat in for a Meet the Author session with Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver via Skype Classroom.
My scholars were inspired by the advice provided given that Mr. Winkler shared his struggles with reading and writing growing up. They were immediately drawn and began researching his books. Considering their profound interest, I plan to create an author study using his books and his life as a tool to instill learning.
These books will assist us with our new library and will capture a further interest in reading.
