My Students
Maya Angelou said, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
I am a second grade teacher at an urban school in Indiana.
My school community is comprised of financially struggling families of all races, languages, and religions, and extremely hard-working teachers and staff. As a community we are trying to give all the students attending our school an opportunity for a better future.
My Project
This year our school started D.E.A.R. time. (Drop Everything And Read) I have been collecting and purchasing books each year to help expand my classroom library. We then had several hundred books to enjoy. After struggling through broken baskets and missing labels, we asked DonorsChoose.org to help us redesign our classroom library and they did!
A great problem we are having now is that our library is in high demand. Over the last few years, we've gotten more books and worn out some of our baskets and comfy seats. We want to put our library under construction and make sure it remains the magical and exciting spot it once was for our daily D.E.A.R. time.
Our school is taking the time to show our students the importance of being a lifelong reader and letting students choose what and where they are reading.
Helping to create and maintain this space makes that time each day a little more special for all the children who use it.
