My Project
My wonderful students come from all facets of life. Some of them face extremely difficult challenges all their own that can make school feel like a torturous prison. The one thing I want them all to be able to have is a place to relax and, even if for just a moment, escape to a different place through the beauty of text.
The library is a home away from home that all children deserve to have.
When students enter my library, they are freed from the stresses of the classroom. They are able to relax and find peace in books, whether that may be through looking at the intricate pictures of an illustrated book or gobbling up words like a starved man would a loaf of bread. And, as such, I want them to have things that would make it easier to do so.
The cushions and small basket I have on my list are primarily for comfort in the library. The books, however, cover a wide range of topics that our library is desperately in need of. We need books that explore different emotions and trials that they have likely faced in their lives, as well as lessons on coping in a safe and healthy way. We also need more books that represent THEM! For example, it's not very helpful to have books about Spanish-speaking places if they're only in English! My end goal is to present all of the students of my school with a place they can breathe while also building and fostering a love of reading.
