My Students

This year I am excited to transition to a new position at the middle school level! I will be teaching reading and writing to 80 sixth graders throughout several periods of the day. I will have students that come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic contexts. At our school, 26.6% of our students are Hispanic: 10% speak limited English, and 35.8% are considered low income. Many students come from homes where they've not been read to, or have had libraries of their own.

The heart of my classroom is that all students have access to quality, rich, and rigorous literature.

Not only is there opportunity to develop reading skills and strategies, but, also, to participate in facilitated class and small group discussions which help students connect literature themes to their own lives. Teacher-student individualized conferences take place on a daily basis.

The classroom is often the first place that a student connects with a book, or a character in literature, in ways that play a part in shaping his/her own personal and emotional growth. It is a deeply meaningful experience to offer care, both academically and emotionally, to students, within my classroom!

My Project

“Reading fiction not only develops our imagination and creativity, it gives us the skills to be alone. It gives us the ability to feel empathy for people we've never met, living lives we couldn't possibly experience for ourselves, because the book puts us inside the character's skin." -Ann Patchett

Having a wide variety of books in my classroom library, will not only support my sixth grade students as readers and writers, but will provide them with an opportunity to develop empathy for others.

Though not a complete selection, perhaps, the books chosen in this project will help nurture empathy and understanding for others who don't share our same experience.

C.S. Lewis wrote, "We read to know we are not alone."

I'm reminded, also, that by providing students with a range of books, they have the wonderful opportunity to discover that the thoughts and feelings they hold in their hearts, and the lives that they, or their family has lived in the past, are true of others in the world, too. They are not alone.

Some of the chosen books will not only help students to empathize with others' experiences, but will give them a picture of people who fought against persecution and great odds, for their value as a people.

Last of all, some books simply highlight the beauty of different ethnic cultures.
