I teach fifth graders. My class size varies from one year to the next, ranging from 25-30 students in one classroom. Students come from a variety of family and socioeconomic contexts. Some are well-supported academically, emotionally and relationally in their homes. Others are from contexts that offer less support. In all cases, students benefit from the opportunity to read rich and rigorous literature. Not only is there opportunity to develop reading skills and strategies, but, also, to participate in facilitated class discussions which help students connect literature themes to their own lives. The classroom is often the first place that a student connects with a book, or a character in literature, in ways that play a part in shaping his/her own personal and emotional growth. It is a deeply meaningful experience to offer care, both academically and emotionally, to students, within the context of literature.
