Every language arts class visits the school library every three weeks, exposing 800 students to a variety of information and resources - all with very limited tech, to date.
San Francisco is considered a technology hub, but MMS students do not have access to modern educational technologies in their school library.
In addition, teachers in all subject areas may bring their classes to the library to focus on specific areas of interest - as long as it doesn't require individual access to computers! With 80% of our student body qualifying for free or reduced lunch, many of our students are not receiving any exposure to the technology that is required of today's young adults or that will be required of tomorrow's adults.
Our school library has an obligation to these students to provide access to a range of learning tools that allow them to explore their creativity, learn new skills, and apply their learning in innovative ways. Chromebooks are among these needed tools.
My Project
As the school librarian, I can teach by projecting a lesson onto a screen, but without hands-on experience will students remember how to download an eBook from the public library, or search the District's databases, for example?
There just aren't enough computers, in any form, to go around. We need 40 Chromebooks and a charging cart.
My responsibility is to teach students and teachers how to use technology tools for personal and academic learning, communication, production, and collaboration.
By having access to a dedicated library of Chromebooks, both students and teachers will be exposed to tools and activities that will not only meet their curricular needs, but which will carry them beyond the school day for 24/7 learning.
