My Students
I have good news and some bad news. The good news is that I will be working with 30 beginning readers who need a little intervention. The bad news is that I do not have any materials for them. I need magazines for them to read to succeed.
My school is close to two military bases and a significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel.
Our small K-6 public school is over 30 years old and many of my wonderful K and first graders are deemed at-risk. This year I will work with 3 small RTI groups consisting of 5 students who receive ESL services, 7 in Indian Education, 14 who are language delayed and 4 who are in a special program because of anger management issues. The majority of these students are Tier 2 and 3 and they lack social skills, print and number awareness. Well over half of them qualify for free and reduced price breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. As a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of many schools. Although my students represent the very best in America, many of my students do not even have the funds for school supplies but they still want to learn. They need special materials to foster their reading readiness.
My Project
My library serves a significant number of at-risk and bilingual students who are just learning about the English language, learning in an academic setting, and about using libraries. They have never been to school before but they love it. This year I will work with 3 small groups of RTI students. 87% of my RTI students have no magazines, print materials or books in their homes. I do not have enough supplemental materials at the appropriate reading level. I need reading material for my wonderful students. I am asking for 30 subscriptions to My Big World. If my children are going to be successful, they need help. I plan to introduce magazines to my students. We will read My Big World together and then students will take the magazines home to share so that parents and siblings can help encourage reading. I know these magazines will spark an interest in reading simple nonfiction texts.
In order to help my students, I need magazines to encourage reading and text awareness.
My Big World magazines will help get my RTI students excited about reading short, on-level nonfiction. My students will learn about seasonal science and social studies topics while building their essential nonfiction-reading skills. There is no money in the budget for these essential materials. Please help my students.
