Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Whenever I strike up a conversation with my students, I cannot help but envision them as the engineers, educators, performers, and politicians of their generation. And I am incredibly motivated to help them reach their goals.

Our school is a Title I school in Las Vegas, serving predominantly Latinx-identifying and low-income students within one of the lowest academically performing districts in the country.

This narrative is one that our school strives to break by providing an exceptional education that provides 6th to 12th-grade students skills and training for life outside the classroom and becomes the first person in their family to receive a college degree. Giving new life to the library will help nurture voracious readers, learners, and future leaders of our community.

My Project

Going back in person, after a year of virtual instruction, will have challenges of its own; and the ones that have been left behind before virtual instruction are even more important to discuss now. One of which is the abandonment and mistreatment of books and libraries --- which affect the academic and social achievement of students.

Our school has had an inoperative library without a specific librarian for the past few years and has had books in the collection not being used or circulated properly (or at their full potential.

My project to reinvigorate the library requires book protective materials and decorations so that the books will (1) have better usage and longevity, (2) teach students the importance of treating the books with care, and (3) help students understand that libraries are gateways to information and knowledge about themselves, their interests, and the world. We recently obtained 700 new books that are cultural and topic diverse. With your help, we can put all of our books in students’ hands and help them get to, through, and beyond the college of their dreams!
