This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
QUESTION: What is more fun than reading? ANSWER: Talking about what you've read with a group of peers!
I am the teacher librarian at a huge urban school in Los Angeles.
Our overall literacy test scores indicate that a vast majority of our students are struggling with reading proficiency. And too many of our students don't value reading; several, in fact, actively abhor it!
I am desperately working to change this negative attitude towards the written word. One way I am doing this is by facilitating a weekly book club in the library at lunch. And with each new monthly session, I am meeting new students who wander in to see what it is all about. The surprise for me is that many of the students who are participating are the very at risk students about which I was speaking.
My Project
My students need book club sets of novels---two adventure fantasies and one realistic fiction romance.
Every four weeks a new session of Book Club begins. Small groups of students who are all reading the same title scatter throughout the library. I offer several different genres each session to attract a variety of students, each with different literary interests---science fiction, mystery, fantasy, romance, etc.
Each week during the month, students bring their lunches and talk about the novel they are reading with peers and one adult facilitator (parents, teachers, staff, community members). The students love being introduced to compelling books they might not have discovered on their own. They love talking about their books with like-minded peers. And they love feeling a part of a literacy culture at school, a sense of solidarity through literature.
Thank you so much for considering my proposal to inspire my students and expose them to the joy, the camaraderie, and the meaning of literature and engaging in discussions about it with their peers.
I can't wait to continue developing my students' literary enthusiasm while expanding this program even further! Thank you again for your gracious consideration.
