My Project
My courseload next year is stacked with five sections of EL chemistry-- meaning most of my students will be relative newcomers to the United States who are currently learning English while navigating a large public high school.
I want them to discover our local library, just blocks away, as a place of inspiration, refuge, and resources.
Many students do not know that all they need to obtain a library card in Chicago is a student I.D. (thanks to The 81 Club!). Moreover, that checking out books is free! I have created a series of classroom incentives to extend our independent reading time beyond the classroom and foster a habit and a love of learning among these wonderful, globally diverse teens.
Here is my intial plan:
1. Join the (81) club: Get a library card, show me, and receive a bag of candy or chips.
2. Check out a book: Show me and choose a fancy bookmark.
3. Visit the Edgewater Branch (our closest library) 3 times: Show me proof (I'm working on a card they will get stamped) and select a book-themed totebag or a book light.
