This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagining going into a new classroom and looking in the library to find no books to read.
I am a kindergarten Bilingual teacher in a high poverty area.
Many of my students are newcomers and have been in this country for a short time. This group of kindergarten are eager to pick up books and read. Even looking at picture books they find inspiring stories to tell about the book they "read".
My Project
My school currently made a great decision to extended our kindergarten program from a 4 hour program to a full day kindergarten. The new change is scheduled to happen in a couple of weeks. I currently share a classroom with another teacher. My students come in during the afternoon session after the morning students leave. With the new change all students will be entering and exiting at the same time. This means that the shared room would no longer be available so I am moving into a new classroom. With the change happening 6 weeks after starting school a very small budget was available. Much of that school budget was used to furnish the new classroom and nothing was left to provide a classroom library. Although the students are excited about moving to a new room they are disappointed that they will not have library center because of the lack of books in the library. They enjoy library center because it is a time for them to look at books on their own.
Students need a classroom library.
They need to learn to enjoy books. Explore a new world. They need choices to find out what kind of books they love to read. They need time to share with their friends a book they picked out and tell them why the book is their favorite. They need to talk about books. But if there are no books this exploration is gone. I want my kindergarten to love books. Give them an experience that will stay with them forever. I want them too always love books.
