Do you know how it feels to go to a meeting and there is no space for you? We do. We use our classroom library for weekly meetings, daily writing, and as a library center. There are 14 students in our class and we only have 3 pillows and 1 bean bag. This is a major problem.
My students are in a resource special education class in Illinois.
They love to learn about different countries and compare our culture with the culture of other countries. They like to interact with one another but also like to have "alone time." Many of them are ADHD and have a difficult time staying focused. They love to sit on pillows, therapy balls and bean bags to focus and feel comfortable while working. When they are sitting on these items they are quiet and work a lot harder. When asked why they liked sitting on the pillows and bean bag in our class they stated it was because they were comfortable, they were not restricted by a desk and chair. They could just focus on their assignment. Others stated that they liked sitting alone.
My Project
My students are the movers and shakers in the classroom. They love to go from place to place, desk to desk until they are comfortable and not distracted by uncomfortable chairs and desk to complete their assignments.
Having these pillows, bean bags and therapy balls will provide each students will a special place to sit during writing instruction and weekly "check in" meeting. It will also give each student an opportunity to have a pillow, bean bag, or ball to move around the classroom and work quietly without being distracted by other. This will help them to stay focus when working.
Right now we have limited seating for my students to seat on the floor and be comfortable.
Donating these pillows, bean bags, and therapy balls to my class would change our classroom dramatically.
It will help my students stop focusing on who will get a pillow and the 1 bean bag chair and focus on their lessons. They will also have their own seat that would make them feel special as they go off to work independently or when sitting in the library for our daily and weekly meetings.
