My students need a print rich environment. Many have no access to books, magazines, newspapers, or even online reading material. Having a strong classroom library helps encourage reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are awesome! They face the challenges of being from an impoverished area and attending a Title I school, with enthusiasm and curiosity. Many of my students look forward to attending college in the future, but lack the necessary reading level to be successful in college. Reading must be practiced by doing in order to improve reading levels. improved reading skills will help them believe and achieve in all facets of their lives.
Having an attitude which includes growth, pride, and service is what makes our school #bulldogstrong.
Help from mentors who care about student success will make achieving our goals a dream come true!
My Project
Because of a lack of reading resources at home, many of my students are not readers. It is important to attempt to create a lifelong reader by having a fabulous library in my class.
Most of my students come to me as freshmen with at least a two year deficit in their reading level.
Some are even more than that. I need high interest, leveled reading material that will engage them and spark a love for reading.
Everyone can be a reader; they just need to find the right book!
The only way to improve a student's reading level is to entice them to read. If we are unable to provide a wide variety of reading material then those students who enter high school with a 7th grade reading level will be 6 years behind when they reach their senior year. Deficits mean they will struggle with higher education.
Help me in this small but important way, to purchase books for my classroom library. My method of selecting which books to purchase is to use student recommendations, Kelly Gallagher's Essential Classroom Reading List and my own personal knowledge.
Not only do I wish to improve my students reading levels, but I wish to create a lifelong love of reading.
