Help me give my students non-fiction texts to continue growing our classroom library, so that it is filled with robust and meaningful books at their independent reading levels.
I work in a large elementary school in an urban district, with 60% of our 580 students labeled as high-needs. Nearly 50% of students are economically disadvantaged, and over 20% of our students are identified as having a disability. I work specifically with students with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Many of my students also have a diagnosis of ADHD or anxiety. These challenges do not define my students.
My students are some of the most hard-working children I have ever met despite the challenges they face each day.
They remain positive in the face of adversity and motivate me to better myself, my teaching strategies, and our classroom environment.
My Project
Our school follows a balanced literacy approach through the reading workshop model. During reading workshop, teachers support students through small-group guided reading instruction, and students are also able to independently work with texts at their reading level. Students work with texts that they can read with teacher support during the guided reading portion, receiving direct instruction in their area of need—whether it be decoding, fluency, or comprehension strategies.
Access to meaningful texts at students' reading levels is crucial to success with reading workshop.
Many of my students are reading significantly below grade-level expectations. This set of K-2 grade leveled books will provide my students with high-interest texts at their readability levels. Your donation to this project will help increase student motivation during reading workshop, as well as help students make progress toward their annual reading goals.
