This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I are working together to make my first year as a classroom teacher the best it can be. Every day they walk into the classroom excited and ready to learn and help. Many of my students lack reading materials at home, and throughout the day I am asked whether or not I have a book they can read. Being at an inner-city school, these students may not always have all of the necessary resources or opportunities, but they work together as a class to make the best with what they are given. As their teacher, I am working to create a safe and engaging environment to help these students see the perks of education.
These students are eager to learn and grow as students.
They love having active and hands-on lessons. About 85% of my students are English Language Learners, so having engaging lessons is important to help them with the classwork. As a first year teacher, it is important for me to create a classroom environment where students' creativity is encouraged and their voices and opinions are heard and considered.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of books for my classroom because I am interested in creating a classroom library. Many of my students have little to no access to a public library and do not have books to read for fun. By creating this library, my students will have something to read throughout the day. This will help improve their comprehension and fluency skills as they will have a variety of books with varying levels to read.
Getting my students to read is my biggest goal for the school year.
I have had several students tell me about a lack of reading material at home, and I would love to have something for them to borrow. The books chosen are all near the 5th grade reading level, but I have also requested some below and above grade level to differentiate for my class. Hopefully, this center in my classroom will encourage my students to read more and help grow their reading ability. I am also hoping that through this project, I can see what books my students enjoy and use that information to obtain class-sets of books in the future for read-alouds or differentiated reading groups.
