My Students

Most students who come to this classroom struggle with a traditional school setting. They and their parents have taken the brave step and chosen a different path. They are working in a correspondence program, tutoring, or are coming in to attend a variety of supplemental educational activities to add to their education. They are looking for extra support, improving grades and skills, and some to even complete a high school diploma past the traditional 12 years.

But these students and families are not giving up!

They, and their families are trying extra ways to start a new life. Some are still young, some are struggling with adolescence in hard times, some are in the beginnings of adulthood. All are from a rural area of Alaska. The families are very involved and the students are very motivated. All because they want an overall better family life.

Please show them that they can do this and their education will be worth it.

My Project

There are no classroom library books in our room yet. Our towns here usually have a library, but for some parents and students, it is hard to get to the library and even daunting to try to pick out a good book to read. In our digital age, not all of our students have access to devices they can read from. Plus, there is just something special to reading a physical book. In fact, brain research is showing that reading electronically and reading on physical print is very different from each other!

Please help give the gift of good literature!

I am a Literature major, a Language Arts teacher, and a life long reader. All the books on this list are ones I either remember reading as a student, or my own children loved reading- usually both! I want the students who come to this classroom to be able to find good quality books that have stood the test of time. These have!
