Library Books for 400 Very Young, Voracious Readers!

My students need a set of books specifically designed to engage the very youngest of library patrons - 66 colorful, tough books plus 6 eBooks, intended for children in grades Pre-K through 2.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The books featured in this project are destined for approximately 400 kids in Pre-K through 2nd grade. They are students at a K-8 center in South Florida. I run the school library. About 84% of my library patrons come from households with below average income. The kids tend to be first-generation Americans whose parents have recently arrived in the U.S. from the Caribbean, or from Central or South America. The children don't have access to a lot of juvenile literature at home.

The library needs engaging books for our these, our very youngest readers.

This project features several popular book series that are guaranteed to get our munchkins hooked onto reading.

My Project

It includes 2 copies of each book in the 'Fly Guy' series. We have a few battered 'Fly Guy' books in the library right now. They are far and away the most popular books in the Easy Section. It also includes several 'Pete the Cat' books. We checked some 'Pete the Cat' titles out of the local public library last year and used them at story-time. The kids loved Pete! They identify with him. He tries his best but sometimes makes mistakes. The project also features 6 'Pete the Cat' electronic books, so that teachers can project the stories on their classroom smart boards. The book collection is rounded out with several titles by Eric Carle, of 'The Hungry Caterpillar' fame. All these books are tried and true winners among our little kids. Also, they are very good quality: library books for munchkins have to be tough! These books will fascinate our kids both when they read them in school with their classmates and when they take them home to read with their parents and siblings. Please help us provide our youngest kids with these fun, engaging materials at the very start of their reading careers! Also, remember that by donating to a library you get a lot of 'bang for your buck': these books will be at the disposition of hundreds of little kids. Thank you!
