My Students
I am a bilingual second grade teacher in one of the most under-resourced districts in Brooklyn. My students are an energetic, kind, curious, and diverse group of young learners! The vast majority of them receive free or reduced price lunch and several of them are English Language Learners.
Unfortunately, their former teacher left suddenly in March, and I have taken on full responsibility for the classroom for the remainder of the year.
Many students are struggling with the loss of their teacher and dealing with this transition as best they can. Part of what makes that transition so difficult is the lack of resources in the classroom. As a first year teacher, I do not yet have many of my own materials to support student learning, and I'm looking for help!
My Project
The paper cutter is intended to enhance preparation for art, math, writing, and social-emotional projects. For example, we will soon be making collages using various paper types, and I'll need to cut my paper choices into a variety of shapes and sizes to prepare for this.
The new books and Times for Kids magazines will help ensure that all readers, including my most reluctant readers, stay engaged during independent and guided reading time.
My students have requested many of the texts personally. Our classroom library is quite limited and my students need more books at their levels that are relevant to their lived experiences and interests.
