My students need library bins to help us organize our books. We want to find our books easily when we come into class.

My Students
"Where is the book I want to read?" We hear that often and are always looking for a book in our library. If only we had bins that could help us get organized. Just think of the time we could save and use for reading.
I teach wonderful, motivated second grade students in a New York City public school.
We are in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the nation, and we are so happy to have so many cultures represented. Because of this rich diversity, we have so much to share. Our families speak many languages and are very proud of the school's advocacy for the children. We have a tremendous responsibility to meet the needs of these students who are so anxious to learn and succeed. That means we have to give them the opportunity to use the best resources, so they can move forward and achieve during their academic careers. If we don't provide those resources, who will? I am convinced that second grade is a grade in which many foundations for future learning are established. Our international community has to know that we value their students' success and that means giving the children the best.
My Project
We really need those bins so we have somewhere organized in which to place library books. We have ordered different colors and different sizes so we can organize them by genre and the bins will actually fit on the different size shelves. Without these bins (and we love the primary colors for young children) we will waste valuable class time and the children will constantly ask where they can find the book they wish to read.
Literacy is a focus and the second grade is so important when we establish a foundation for learning. With the Common Core standards, this has become an increased priority. Often people think of the books, but give little thought to storage and organization. A classroom runs on this.
Bins important?
You bet! Time management is always a challenge, but believe it or not, the details of how that is managed are key. Bins for our class library would go so far to help me manage how the children access our library books. What a difference it could make. We hope you agree and support this proposal.
