Our students range from 14-18 and many are learning English as a second language. Everyday, teen moms & babies come to school. Young women can start at our school while they are expecting & continue after their baby is born. Students continue with their academic education as well as learning parenting skills, healthy baby strategies and useful community resources (including jobs & money management).
Our students have very busy lives filled with school, homework, jobs and family responsibilities of caring full-time for an infant!
When they come to school, they are eager to learn both academic work and parenting skills.
Our library includes books & electronic resources for academics, as well as pleasure reading, & a maker space. We established our school library in 2014. Besides research and reading, the school library is collaborating with the science & math teachers to bring new, exciting technology to our students.
My Project
Students have started looking for “new” books for the school library: for teen readers & to read to their little ones. They have several requests for popular authors like Kwame Alexander, Nikki Grimes & Steve Jenkins. Many requests are non-fiction about animals & poetry. They also want to add some coloring books for the library maker space & also a book about “organizing” that can help young parents in school & at home! Finally, these students are planning our library dedication event in the spring. They would like to get some mini-books to use with fellow students to create the program.
Our students are starting their families & are emphasizing the importance of literacy for themselves & their little ones.
Students would like new library books that are contemporary fiction, like "The Hate U Give". They would like to add "A Poem for Peter" when they read other Ezra Jack Keats titles to their little ones. After they use "The Animal Book" & "Animals by the Numbers" for science research, they might choose to relax by coloring a page from "Trianimals" featuring geometric designs!
Students will use the mini books to create colorful decorations for the library dedication and then distribute the mini books to families for their home libraries.
Each young mom balances school with childcare. These students are leaders who hope to read some of the newest books & encourage fellow students to read (and read to their children)!
