My Students
"For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument, debate." - Margaret Heffernan
We are an urban school located in Rego Park, Queens. My students' multicultural backgrounds enrich our classroom community. My students love to engage in conversations using their imaginations and creativity to challenge each other academically.
Our 5th grade students have a lot of great ideas and need an effective way to communicate them to others.
We are a small school in NYC with a diverse population. Our students come from all parts of the world and, in a lot of cases, English is their second language. As a result, words can sometimes be misunderstood.
My students need a series of workshops to gain effective communication skills and find a way to express themselves eloquently and intelligently. This program is designed to teach students how to communicate in an effective way. They learn basic skills of getting a point across using words rather than fists. It builds up their confidence in their ability to stand up in front of an audience, be it peers, parents, or lawyers, to state their case.
My Project
The Debate Club workshops are designed to help students develop communication skills embedded in the Common Core Standards. Every day, the students are given a lesson to work through. They learn how to construct counter arguments and play devil's advocate. Once a week, the class visitor comes in to work with them, highlighting different strategies. They learn to become good citizens, and learn how to stand up for other people's rights. At the end of the 20 week program, they compete with other schools at an event overseen by local lawyers and judges.
Students may enter this program timid and shy, but they leave it with confidence and gusto. It truly is a life-changing experience.
Last year, we had the added bonus of visiting our local courthouse and meeting a presiding judge. One of my students was called aside and given a business card by the presiding judge who told her to call when she graduates law school!
In an age of texting, instant messaging, and Twitter, many students are not acquiring the verbal communication skills necessary to be college and career ready.
This program gives them the skills, strategies and confidence to communicate through the spoken word. I hope you will once again give us the opportunity to run this program.
