Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school is in a culturally-diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.

Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere.

We are working to ensure that the Media Center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their multiple literacy goals.

My Project

Fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates all types of diversity is a core component of our school's educational philosophy. I particularly want students to feel welcomed and appreciated in the Media Center, because the school library can often be a safe haven for kids who feel a bit different or simply aren't sure where they fit in.

Filling our Media Center with books that showcase and lift up LGBTQIA+ voices/stories will create a more well-rounded collection that truly celebrates and respects diverse perspectives.

I am also asking for gay pride/ LGBT pride buttons and flags, so that teachers can display these items. For a kid who may be struggling with their sexuality or gender, seeing these items displayed in the classroom can make all the difference. I want every student to know that they are safe, valued, and seen.
