Levy Library needs Luscious Literary Labels

My students need 2 copies each of 9 chapter books in the historical genre (especially Revolutionary War, Civil War, and World War I and II) to read for one of their book reports.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Levy's classroom raised $171

This project is fully funded

My Students

Sandra Day O'Connor has recently been touring the country speaking on the effects that "No Child Left Behind" has caused on elementary school children and their lack of knowledge in social studies, due to teacher's spending the majority of their time focusing on 'literacy' and test prep. Shameful.

I teach 5th grade in Reno, NV at a 'low income, high needs' school.

My students, in general, don't have excess to literature at home, which greatly affects their background knowledge in most content curriculum areas. It is hard to try to capture 'interest' with these kids that doesn't involve video games. BUT, I have found a strand that is extremely interesting to them.....American History! I love teaching history. When a teacher is excited about teaching a subject (which is rare these days with so much pressure to 'teach to the test'), the students pick up on that enthusiasm and are excited, as well. Luckily, our 5th grade reading and social studies series cross paths with the Revolutionary War. With so much exposure, my students LOVE learning about it! With the many activities I have for my students, the hardest to fulfill is the 3rd quarter book report on "History" (either fiction or non-fiction). I hardly have any books in my classroom library on this subject, I would like more.

My Project

Did you know that Deborah Sampson was taller than most men, so that's how she was able to disguise herself as a man and fight in the Revolutionary War? Can you recall the name of the place where Benedict Arnold's victory for the Patriots was a turning point in the war? With a classroom library full of historical chapter books, my students could find out these answers, and many more, inspiring them to further excite their curiosity in our country's history. Remember when I mentioned Sandra Day O'Connor above? I don't want my students to become one of her statistics of student's "losing their history". I have found something to pique their curiosity that doesn't involve videos or MP3 players, and I would like to give them a lifetime of love for our country and a deep respect for what it took to earn our Liberty.

With your help to support my project of building a 'historical' section to my classroom library, my students can continue their interest and excitement of our country's rich history by checking out these books and using them for their "historical" bookreport, or just reading for fun.

With the challenges education faces every year, the one thing we shouldn't lose is our love of Liberty, our love of History. "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death",our children deserve to have the resources to learn.
