Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly of Hispanic and Latino descent. The majority of our students are from lower income communities. They love working in groups, experientially learning, and are culturally diverse.
I teach 7th grade science at a public middle school where students have scant exposure to effective digital literacy.
The school that I teach at is receiving chromebooks but will be sharing them between classes and teams. Our school has a focus on STEM programs with an science academy for those who apply.
My Project
I want to start a computer and digital literacy club, provide easy access to translation for ELL learners, and allow online research for projects in my classroom. The school is projected next year to exceed the 800+ students we already have and push teachers to integrate technology into their learning so students can be competitive.
To accomplish this, students need regular opportunities to practice discerning the functions of various software interfaces.
Otherwise, the technology becomes a choke point because students can't use them and undermines our learning goals. We have computer labs but because of overcrowding and pervasive high-stakes testing, it is near impossible to schedule regular time there.
The document camera will allow me the flexibility of demonstrating experiments with students and model note-taking. The printer will allow me to make vibrant class sets of reusable activities in color. The tablets will be an invaluable resource for offline access to our science etextbook. I will allow select responsible students to use them at home.
The Twigs science video content will provide an appropriately leveled resource for EL students in my classrooms. The tablets can also be used for students who need direct translation and would otherwise unable to participate in general classroom discourse.
