Just as the athlete needs to practice shooting hoops, punting the football, or running the 50 yard dash, 2nd graders need to practice reading independently every day. In the same way the athlete will show no improvement if he practices the wrong moves, students' independent reading will not improve if they are trying to read books that are not at the right level for them. In my class of 18 second graders I have a wide variety of reading levels: Five children read at a Kindergarten or early first grade level, three read at a level equivalent to the end of 2nd grade or early third grade, one student reads circles around everyone else, testing out around a fourth grade reading level, and everyone else is spread out between mid-first grade and early second grade. The one resource I urgently need is leveled books for my lower and mid range readers. I would love to have enough books to satisfy the needs of every child in my room during independent reading time. I also need enough books to send home with my students to read at night. Some of my students have several books at home, but many of my students come from impoverished homes where books are a rare commodity; 12 out of 18 of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch as do approximately 70% of the student body in this K-6 grade elementary school in Spartanburg County School District 7. I do have some suitable chapter books for my upper level students, but I have next to nothing for my lower and mid level students to read. I am asking you to help level the playing field, or rather, the reading field, for my students by supplying them with a good amount of “just right?books. Your generous contribution will put 108 books, levels K - L, right into the hands of these children. Thank you for helping me "level the reading field" for my second grade students.
