Help me give my students books that are on their independent reading level to help them reach their reading goals and build their vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension skills.
My students are in a self-contained special education class. They are fourth and fifth graders, but most of them are working below grade level in most subject areas. The majority of these students come from low-income households and do not have access to technology or the Internet. They are working below grade-level and require special supplemental materials to bridge the gap.
These students are struggling academically and emotionally due to a variety of disabilities, including Autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, learning disabilities, health impairments, and emotional disabilities.
My students struggle with many daily tasks, including time management, organization, computer skills, and handwriting/occupational skills. Many of my students do not have access to a computer or the Internet at home, and they have not developed the technological skills necessary to keep up with the ever-changing demands of the 21st century.
Having a technology-focused environment will allow my students to develop those skills, while working interactively to learn and review previously learned concepts throughout the year.
My Project
This project consists of books that are on a second and third grade reading level for my third, fourth, and fifth grade special education students. They currently do not have enough books that are on their independent reading level. This project will provide them with access to books that they are able to read, which will in turn build their reading fluency and comprehension.
Having books that my students can read independently will help build their confidence.
They will feel like they can succeed and view reading as a fun activity without becoming frustrated because the books are too difficult. These leveled books will be used during Guided Reading and Reader's Workshop so that students can practice the daily lesson independently.
