This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my classroom come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many of them have experienced varying forms of trauma and abuse in their short lifetimes and come from low income households. Others are ESL students, whose families have just moved into town, and they are learning the language and how to live in a new city.
Despite this, they are an amazing group of students who show up every day ready to learn.
They show great work ethic and are eager learners, thirsty for knowledge and wanting to further their education.
My Project
Already at the beginning of this year, I can tell that my students love to read. However, I am only in my second year of teaching, and the options that I have in my classroom library are very limited. I would like to be able to provide them with a wide variety of options quality books they can read during their silent reading time, during our daily guided reading rotations.
For this particular project, I am looking to add several books to each guided reading level, so students have options of books they can choose to read during this time.
It is a requirement in my classroom that all students have at least 2-3 books accessible to them to read during this time. However, due to the reading levels and needs of my students this year, I simply don't have the access to this literature in my own classroom library, for them to be able to have this available.
