Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you know the longest word in the English language is "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis"? How well did you decode that word as an adult? Well, children ages 5-7 learning to read see all words as intimidating as these.
My students are a diverse group of first graders at an inner city public school.
Many of the children have little to no books in their homes and rarely visit a public library. Not only do my students, lack the availability of books, they lack the knowledge of how to find books that are at their readability level, therefore getting discouraged before ever beginning.
My Project
The books I am asking for would provide books that are leveled to each student's independent reading level. Therefore children would have the opportunity to visit the classroom library, find a book they can read with 95-100% accuracy and feel successful.
I would be able to utilize these books to create small groups and teach differentiated lessons that meet the needs of the specific children in each group.
In this proposal I am asking for levels A and B. This would address the needs of my most emergent readers in my class. Some of these children have not had any previous exposure, while others are in need of intensive and strategic reading instruction to help boost their confidence and strategies.
By helping us with this project, you will not only be providing children with new experiences and quality literature; you will be playing a critical role in the development of their literacy development.
