This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For kindergarten students, having concrete ways to measure their reading success is motivating. Tracking their ability to move from one level to the next helps them 'see' their progress! A Rigby leveled library will help my students to monitor their growth.

My kindergarten students are emergent or beginning readers.

Many are English Language Learners. They are growing up in South Central Los Angeles. Every day, they will choose a book from our classroom library, bring it home, and read it to their family. They look forward to selecting the books that they will share with their family. My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households. Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many parents speak and read in a language different than English. They struggle to help their children academically. It makes reading time more relaxing and uplifting when students can read their books to their parents with confidence. 'Just Right' Books that fit a student's reading level help!

My Project

Even at the kindergarten level, we expect students to "read"! For my emergent readers, reading can be pointing to the pictures and sharing what they see, pointing to the words and telling the story, and/or flipping through each page and retelling the story from memory. As they start to decode words, it helps to have books that have repetitive sentence patterns and closely matched pictures and text. This helps my students to use the skills that they learned as emergent readers to connect written word to sounds and meaning. As part of our reading program, my students would be screened and informed of their reading level. Then, in small groups, they would master one level and move on to the next level. The Rigby leveled library books would support this program by providing my students with books that fit their level which they can read in partners and at home independently. This added practice should accelerate their ability to master a level and feel pride about their progress.

Donating to my project to get Rigby leveled library books into my classroom will provide my students with books that meet their unique needs as emergent readers.

It will provide reading materials designed to help a 'budding' reader face the challenge and succeed! And, it will encourage my students to persist in reading higher level and more difficult text because they will see their progress from one level to another.
