Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's extremely unfortunate, but the reality is that most of my students do not have books in their homes. This fact deprives my students from reading on a nightly basis.
We are a founding charter school in East Los Angeles.
Our school is part of the charter network featured in the movie “Waiting for Superman”. All of our students come from underserved communities. Communities where opportunities, such as this school with ambitious goals, are unfortunately rare.
We teach the academic skills, cultivate the character traits, provide the learning experiences, and forge the community relationships needed for our elementary students to thrive in middle school, high school, college, and life.
My Project
A leveled library is ideal for instruction as it can be used for guided and independent reading. More importantly, students can take these books home to practice reading with their families. The large number of books will help provide differentiated instruction and this will ensure every student’s needs are met.
We hope you can relate to Susan B.
Neuman: “Access to books and educational material is the single biggest barrier to literacy development in the United States and beyond. If we can solve the problem of access, we will be well on the road to realizing educational parity – a goal which has eluded this country for generations.” PLEASE HELP close the literacy gap for my entire class with these books.
