This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My goal for this year is to put the perfect book in each of my students' hands! In order to do so, I need multiple copies of multiple books on multiple levels! By funding this project, you will be putting leveled readers into the hands of 24 awesome first graders!

I am a first grade teacher!

In my classroom, I have 24 dynamic students. Although the boys dramatically out-number the girls (15:8!), we are super-students who enjoy teamwork and a challenge any day of the week! My classroom would be considered an "at-risk" group of students - as the vast majority of my babies come from low-income homes. Many of them are children of single parents and have witnessed all too much violence and drama in their young lives. We would also be considered "multi-cultural" as we are as different as they come! Six of my students are even learning English as their second language! With your help, my students will flourish as readers and find success in academia!

My Project

I am requesting four sets of leveled readers. The readers I am requesting are leveled A-D in order to meet the needs of my early readers. Level A readers are the easiest, but they get progressively more difficult as the letter increases. A through D should be perfect to get us started this year! In each set comes multiple copies of each of 15 books. This means I can have small groups of students working with the same book, but also provide enough of a variety for students so that they don't get bored with their readers! Additionally, I am requesting sentence strips so that we can complete some post-reading activities. Sentence strips are great for sight word projects, comprehension projects, word building projects, and many other activities!

I firmly believe that education is the key to liberation. Additionally, I believe that the better one can read, the more doors that key will open. I NEED to get these 24 students reading and reading well before they leave me for the 2nd grade. The materials I am requesting will get us on the right track!
