Do you remember what it was like learning to read? Maybe you struggled or maybe it came naturally to you. My 1st grade students are faced with just that. They need books that are on their level that they can pick up and read successfully by themselves, regardless of how well they can read.
I teach 1st grade in an urban school in Illinois.
Most students at my school come from low income families where a having a large variety of books at home is not a possibility. Within my classroom, my students amaze me every day with the hard work they display and love for learning they have, despite their situations.
I am requesting a variety of level D through H level books that my students will be able to access inside the classroom and take home each night to read. My school is piloting a guided reading based reading curriculum where students will be building their love of reading and reading stamina by reading independently more and more each day. Having these books will give students the opportunity to read books on their specific level where they can be successful. Since most of the students do not have access to a variety of books at home, they will also have the opportunity to take home books each night to read.
Your support would help 6 and 7 year old children in their quest to become expert readers.
The combination of our school's new guided reading program and a wide variety of leveled books for the students will be the basis for a lifelong love of reading for our students.
