Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade students are starving for stories. Stories that capture their imaginations. Stories filled with mystery. Stories that help them to develop a love a reading. Unfortunately our grade level library only consists of simple informational texts. This is something I would like to change.

My third graders are quite diverse.

They come from all different ethnic backgrounds and cultures, but all of them have a voracious appetite when it comes to reading. Their favorite time of the week is library time. "Teacher, will you help me find a good book?" Is something I hear quite often. When I ask them what kind of books they like to read they reply that they would like to read a chapter book. They are at the phase in life where they like to read more and more chapter books.

My Project

I have requested various chapter books that I would like to use during Guided Reading and Shared Reading. These books will be shared with all the third grade classes during Guided Reading. These books are all on different levels according to the levels we currently have in third grade. During Guided Reading I read with small groups. Each reading group consists of students that read at the same level. During Shared Reading all the students will have access to the book as we share the story together. We have only been able to read books from our limited leveled library (mainly short informational text). I can't wait to see the excitement on my student's faces when I show them the new chapter books that they get to read. I know that they will be excited to dive into these books. These books will be like the most delicious pizza to my book starved students. (As you know that pizza is always a kids favorite food.) It is something that I can see they have been craving.

I know that reading captivating stories like these books can change a third grader's life.

Reading chapter books changed my life. I can still remember the chapter books I read in third grade and how they helped me form a love of reading. This my desire for all of my students. I want them not only to be life-long learners, but life-long readers.
