This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This ninth grade student body is 33% labeled with special education needs, a majority as learning disabled. My students are 14-15 years old, with below grade level literacy, but more life experience than most teens. Their critical thinking skills are ready to be put to the test with literary analysis that will be relevant to their lives. They are in desperate need of escaping to the world of reading and realizing that others also experience hardships. Right now, I have several students who live in group homes, have had trouble with juvenile detention, or are struggling with problems in the home.
My students deserve access to literature that they crave.
These teens live in a rural community adjacent to a major metropolitan city. They are exposed to deportation of family members, neighborhood shootings, neglect, and often violence. Giving them literature they can relate to or where they can see another point of view, can create a lifelong love of learning.
My Project
Reading is fundamental to the growth and development of our students. With literature circles, students are able to have a say in their independent reading while using the necessary skills to decipher a text.
When students have a say in their reading, their growth flourishes!
By providing titles of different genres and reading levels, all of my ninth graders will be able to use literature circles to expand their learning in ways they otherwise would be unable to. Reluctant readers feel empowered when they have a choice, and this independent reading strategy is made just for that.
