My students need headphones with built-in microphones in order to complete projects on their iPads, like iMovie, Let's Recap, Flipgrid, and Padlet.

My Students

My school is made up of a variety of different socio-economic backgrounds. My classroom is made up of a diverse group of academic levels. This means I have regular education students, gifted students, and special education students in one room. One of my favorite quotes as an educator reads, "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." I always keep this quote in mind while incorporating technology and differentiated lessons and activities into my fourth-grade classroom.

Throughout my years of teaching, I have learned that all students wish to move, collaborate, and be engaged in critical thinking.

The most powerful learning often happens when students self-monitor or reflect.

It is my obligation, as the teacher, to facilitate these experiences and provide my students with a meaningful education.

My Project

We have iPads in our classroom that allow for different structures of learning. We need headphones with built-in microphones to use while recording the results of experiments, reflections of learning, and projects.

Some of our math apps that provide various math practice skills require students to listen to directions or video lessons, which allow me to have activities for both my highest performing and most struggling students.

The headphones will be very useful for students while engaged in math centers. However, that is not the only use for headphones in our classroom.

As stated in an online article in Educause Quarterly, "Reflective learning can aid learners in synthesizing new information, and it is often used to improve reading comprehension, writing performance, and self-esteem via self-examination."

Learning comes about not from doing, but from thinking about what we do. The microphones are needed so that students can record their reflections on learning with a good sound quality. They need the opportunity to respond for real and authentic purposes. Recording themselves provides an excellent way to share their reflections with others, and research shows that this type of reflection multiplies the learning for each individual. Padlet is an online virtual “bulletin” board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, and share in a secure location.

Research is increasingly telling us that without the process of actively thinking about their experiences and questioning themselves about what they mean, learning doesn’t really happen. These headphones with microphones and Padlet will provide a pathway for students to participate in this type of reflective learning. My project will make a difference because students today are digital natives, and our classrooms are not yet at the level technologically to meet their needs as learners. This grant will help to close that gap just a little bit more.
