My Students

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be teaching an extraordinary group of 5th-grade students this year! Our elementary school is positioned in the beautiful mountains of rural, Northwestern Pennsylvania. My class of 5th-grade students comes from diverse backgrounds which creates a very dynamic classroom, of ability levels and experiences. As an educator, I understand the significance of diversity in the classroom. I embrace my students’ academic and cultural differences. By modeling this acceptance with my students, we are able to do great things. “Students learn a great deal by explaining their ideas to others and by participating in activities in which they can learn from their peers” (Boud, 2001).

As part of our School District’s Mission Statement, our ambition is for our students to become ‘life-long learners and responsible members of society.’ With the addition of a classroom library of trade books, it is my hope to ignite the spark of a love of reading, and ultimately a life-long learner within my students.

My Project

Research shows that by age 11, 42% of children have lost interest in reading. By the time students reach middle school almost half of them have lost the interest to read books for pleasure. In a recent survey completed by teachers, the research showed that 94% of students surveyed said they preferred spending time online to reading a book. With those kinds of numbers, I thought why can't students do both? I have found the book Towervale which incorporates both reading and online gaming.

With the help of your donations, my students will be transported to a world where they are the hero of their reading adventure.

Students will begin their adventure in the Caves of Iron and will be taken through three realms where they will encounter a world far beyond their imaginations. Towervale is organized into seven different sections that are not in order. Each section ends with a password that must be entered into the Towervale game, unlocking that particular level. When the level is cleared, the next page to turn to in the book is revealed. There is one MAJOR catch: if students didn't read the previous section in the book, they will have no idea how to clear the level in the game.
