Level On Up!

My students need a variety of leveled readers. Currently, we only have three different leveled readers from our reading program and it doesn't meet my student's needs.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Kindergarten with 26 students in a low income community.

My students deserve the best education with the best resources.

I am always looking for ways to improve my classroom to help my students be the most successful they can be. They appreciate everything that we do for them. Our school community is small, but our families have big hearts.

A typical day in my kindergarten classroom consists of whole group, small group activities, lots of hands on activities and independent work. My students transition often between the rug and their tables for cooperative work and independent work.

My Project

I teach kindergarten and my students are just beginning their educational careers. It is amazing to see the progress that our students make within a year with their reading. These classroom libraries will give my students many different reading options for their level. I have such a variety of learners and we want to keep their motivation for learning to read and these classroom libraries will do just that. Also, if a student sees a book that piques their interest and it is a higher level book, I believe he/she will learn how to read it and it will be a sense of accomplishment. My students will be challenged more during guided reading using these books and new goals will be set for their independent reading.

When students see other peers reading different books, this is another motivating factor to keep my students interested in learning how to read higher leveled books.

All of my student's needs will be met with these classroom libraries. There will be so much more of a variety than what I currently have.

The two leveled classroom libraries will help not just my room but three other classrooms in my school. Our reading program is missing many leveled readers and we are not meeting the different levels of our students. Our students need more of a variety of books that are interesting to them. Teachers in my school are always looking for leveled readers and it's unfortunate how expensive it is to purchase.

Over the summer, I went through my books that I had and bought reading bins and labeled by genre and monthly themes. This year, my class enjoys choosing a book from one of the book bins and trying to read it. The libraries will give them more opportunities to read.
