Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade language arts and social studies in a two year loop to students in a large urban city. The majority of my students live in a one mile radius of our campus, making this a true neighborhood school. Many of my students come from Puerto Rico, which means they are bilingual with Spanish being the primary language at home.

They are an amazing group of socially conscious young women and men, consistently seeking out opportunities to learn about issues presented in our community.

Most students struggle academically to close the achievement gap that exists within our community. With support and a boost of self confidence, my students are able to show significant growth both academically and socially. I anticipate continued success in this upcoming school year with my hardworking students.

My Project

Whether it's filling up on corner store snacks, or skipping meals because the food available is less than stellar, on a daily basis my students make food choices that could have long term detrimental effects on their health. My students typically fuel their bodies with highly processed and highly caloric foods ultimately creating a state where 30% of students are considered overweight or obese (according to kidscount.org). As a result of their limited food options and uninformed choices, my middle school students have asked to start a cooking club.

They want to learn about how to create dishes at home so that they don't have to always rely on the corner store and fast food restaurants for food.

We will need a classroom kitchen, including a stove, refrigerator, pots and pans and cooking utensils. Additionally we have video equipment to help us film our recipes and produce content for our school news station. We will be able to disseminate our recipes and nutrition information to a much broader audience, impacting even more people within the community.

Furthermore, we do have a gardening club producing fresh fruits and vegetables to help us sustain this club with ingredients for our recipes. By teaching teenagers to cook and create meals for themselves and families, we can foster independence and help combat the health crisis that they are facing.
