Letters Make Words

Help me give my students their own sets of Wikki Stix(r) Alphabet Cards, along with the other needed supplies, to use at home during our 'Zoom' sessions until we return to in-person learning.

My Students

Like most teachers, I am attempting to adapt to the diverse needs of a learning environment constantly in flux. My current priority is the students with whom I work because they went home Tuesday for the remainder of 2020; we are virtual again. We only just began to make progress in our small reading groups.

My biggest concern is for my youngest readers –the kids in the margins– those needing intensive remediation, along with English Language needs.

My emergent readers are in need of not only grade level intervention,

but the time and materials with which to practice critical foundational reading skills they have not yet mastered.

My Project

Letters and their corresponding sounds are the foundation to all literacy learning. However, my first grade intervention group continue to struggle to identify their letter names and sounds.

The manipulatives and white paddles used with markers will allow my students to practice crucial phonological skills, learning how to put letters together to make words, and ultimately improve their reading ability.

The activities planned for use with the requested materials will reinforce both decoding and encoding by tapping into my readers' auditory and visual processing.

According to Terry (2020, April 9), in order to read you need to decode (sound out) words. You need to encode words to spell, meaning you pull the sounds apart within a word and match letters to the sounds. Thus, the books will both expand on and reinforce our letter and word work as well as give my readers opportunities to read to their families at home.

Most importantly, your generosity will facilitate learning progress and success for each reader at his/her 'just right' reading level. Ultimately, my hope is that my emergent readers will not only strengthen their phonological skills, they will learn to love reading by overcoming this current barrier.
