I teach special education in the public school setting. My students each year range from the 18 month cognitive level to a 4 year old cognitive level. There are some students at higher levels, however, they are not my primary students.
The primary focus of my classroom is to give students life skills that they will need to succeed in the real world at the level they are capable of whether it be filing papers at a office in town or being the employer of their caregiver.
Many of our goals focus on learning basic math and money skills as well as basic reading and language skills. With these type of goals, we are working on identifying letters, letter sounds, putting letters in the correct order and matching objects with the letter that they begin with.
Due to the variety of disabilities that my students cope with on a daily basis, they learn better with 3 dimensional objects. They need to feel, see and sometimes even smell an item to fully understand the information that is associated with that item. My students work extremely hard on a daily basis to fulfill the goals to help them achieve so much!
My Project
These materials will give my students the opportunity for hands on learning in a variety of ways. By using the alphabet tubs, my students will be able to work with an adult to identify the object and match with the correct beginning letter in the alphabet pocket chart. My higher level students will be given a bucket of items to sort depending on the sounds that the item begin with. Since these items are 3 dimensional, the students will have a better understanding of what the item is.
We have centers set up in our classroom, while the alphabet tubs are being used for the one on one or small group learning, the magnetic tins will be utilized for independent work.
This will check the students understanding of the concepts but also give the opportunity to build on the new skill by going into phonemic awareness and word building.
