This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 22 active and curious 4- and 5-year-old students. These students are English Language Learners in a Title I school where more than 95% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My pre-K students are happy and excited to be in school.
Even though my students have challenges, I focus on each child's potential. I want to help my students develop and grow as much as possible during the time they are in my class. It is important for me to get them the resources they need to be the best learners they can be. I know that with a little support, my students will thrive.
My Project
I want to help my Pre-K students start the process of learning to read. These Alphabet Tubs are ideal because they contain interesting miniature objects which are discussed and handled during small group instruction. The students will be able to see the letter on the outside of the tub to aid in letter recognition. Each miniature object helps reinforce the sound of the letter we will study while also helping develop language and vocabulary.
Our students and their families suffered a great deal from Hurricane Harvey at the beginning of last school year.
Many families lost homes and possessions due to the heaving flooding of the area. However, we are working hard to overcome the setbacks of last year by providing a safe and engaging learning environment for all learners. These Alphabet Tubs will help me provide fun and interesting lessons for my little students.
As they learn more letters and sounds, students will continue to use the letter tubs to sort the miniature objects by initial sound. Learning the sound of letters is the first step in reading, which will set up my students for success in Kindergarten and beyond.
