Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a great bunch. It's always a mix of abilities and personalities. As a teacher you'll get students who are overachievers, can doers, and the less than ambitious kind. Regardless of the students caliber, a teacher always asks the best out of them. This is why teaching art is a great way for all students to show what they can do.

My students come from a community that has one of the lowest poverty levels and almost 100% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Regardless, my students come in with decent attendance and effort. There is always room for improvement. My students push through many obstacles and many times endure broken air conditioners and lack of funds for proper materials.

Students are not fancy, overbearing, or have a chip on their shoulders. They have a willingness to try and do their best regardless of their social economic status. My students have a funny way of thinking about things. One example is when students who do remarkably well think their work is subpar. This is when I say their work is beautiful. They disagree and keep working on it and sometimes, they redo the work.

My Project

Lettering is important to everyone. We use lettering to convey ideas and concepts. The use of type can carry a different message and impact our decisions. Lettering is so often made with a computer that's its easy to forget that it was always done by hand. It required skill, determination, and passion.

This is why my students are getting a chance to create letterforms by learning various types.

Students will use basic math to calculate height and weight of letter type while estimating proper spacing. This handmade work is rewarded by using nice materials to create signs that have function and look appealing. Students take pride in their work especially when it will be seen by others.

Using gouache which is a high quality tempera, is a great medium for students to use because it eliminates brushstrokes and also covers well. Students practice their letters in pencil and marker, but when students use paint, they feel that what they are doing is what real artists used and it validates their work. This creates an environment where confidence grows and becomes an enjoyable experience.
