My Students

Our sixth-grade students are very diverse and have a lot of personality! At this age, students are "awakening" their "adult minds" and asking all the questions they can. It is a lot of fun to work with students in this grade-level, because they have a lot of opinions and ideas, as well as curiosities.

At our school, we have lots of cultural capital and we focus on working together and supporting each other as a community.

Many of our students tend to praise and recognize one another on a regular basis, and often, the "new kids" are immediately "folded" into the existing social structure, gaining a family of friends in an instant. It is a real joy to watch them interact and explore as they mature.

These kids are at the "top of the heap" this year, as they finish elementary school. They start the year with a lot of confidence and bravado. That turns to nervousness and worries later on, as they begin to realize they will have to learn a whole new school and daily routine the next year, as they enter middle school! In June, they will cry, but we tell them to come back anytime!

My Project

Students in the 6th grade really need to feel like they have a voice and that their opinions matter in the classroom. With an interactive classroom center for writing on the (dry-erase) wall, students will have a safe and fun space to show off what they think and what they know.

We have a massively large HVAC cabinet in one corner of our room that wastes a lot of valuable space.

This project will make good use of that space with the use of magnetically hung dry-erase boards! I will post daily questions on the larger dry erase board and each student will have their own mini-board to post their responses with colorful markers and erasers of their choice.

Not only will students be able to read and review their classmates' ideas, but as a teacher, I will also be able to use their responses to help me perform formative assessments of their learning and thinking. Moreover, this area will become a fun zone, where students are literally writing on the wall! Students will also begin to look forward to responding to a new, interesting prompt each day.

Help me build this fun and interactive corner for my classroom and my students to exercise their thinking and writing skills every day!
