Let's Work It Out!-Helping Students With Sensory and Emotional Regulation
My students need to feel safe and comfortable with flexible seating, lap pad, pillows, and wobble chairs, as they navigate through strong sensory needs and powerful emotions.
My wonderful students are composed of 4K-5th graders. All of these unique children have special needs ranging from Autism, Emotional Behavioral Disorders, Learning Disabilities and more. Many of these children have sensory processing needs impacting their emotional regulation, body control and attention.
A sensory processing disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to the information that comes in through the senses.
Many of my students need to feel safe when they attempt to figure out what their body needs in order to regulate their emotions. Once they feel regulated, then they can move through their day to be a success. Success looks differently for each of my students as they each have specific goals to work on. For some sitting in class and not having a melt down is a good day, while for others working through an assessment is another great day!
My Project
Imagine THIS! You are sitting in an elementary school. There is a lot to take in! You see classrooms full of color, lots of noises, people talking, others sitting closely to you, being asked to work with others, not knowing what is going to happen next, a fire drill, the cafeteria and then the teacher tells you there is a test! You didn't know about it. You are not strong with the subject. Then the teacher puts on some music and your stomach is growling!
How would you react to that situation?
With all that input, some students would be ok. Some students with sensory or emotional needs may show signs of anxiety, stress or they may withdraw or have a melt down.
With this project I would be able to provide numerous coping strategies to help students regulate their emotions or sensory needs. With these items I can provide opportunities for the students to take breaks and to help them be mindful of their choices. I would be able to provide movement with Wobble chairs to help students reduce anxiety or symptoms from ADHD. A peaceful teepee would provide a calm safe place when children are attempting to regulate strong emotions. Many times students like to hide or feel closed in. A teepee provides a safe place away from others. Plus, what a fun place to read and do some independent work! The weighted pad, reading pillow, mermaid pillow would help students feel comfortable. The books would also provide the students and myself more coping strategies.
